Memphis Last Day (Thursday)

It was an eventful, exciting, sweet, and tearful last full day today in Memphis. We worked at the Grizzlies Center again today and scrubbed the floors of their entire entryway. Kids and leaders were on their hands and knees all morning scrubbing their little hearts out. We never heard any complaining and they actually made it fun. I was really moved today seeing how hard the kids worked- not just to get the job done, but because they care and want to serve diligently. Other students also helped some leaders complete some planter boxes that were started last Spring Break at St. Andrews. We hope they can use it to provide some food for their students. 

The last day at the gyms were incredible also. We saw our kids truly exemplify what it meant to take steps of faith and intentionally seek to plant seeds. There were multiple kids who were very intentional with sharing the gospel and their testimonies. Even in the short amount of time we've been here, our students made an impact on the kids they came in contact with. We had many tearful good-byes, but it was sweet to see how the Lord's love can be so powerful. 

After a quick dinner of hotdogs and hamburgers again, we worshipped with Sunday Morning NES and got to heard from Randy Odem, MAM's COO. He challenged the students in the importance of living a missional and a discipleship lifestyle. 

It's been an incredible week. The Lord has been so faithful to work in and through our team's lives. We pray that he will produce fruit as he wills in the Memphis student's lives and that our students will also have a long-lasting impact as well. We're sad the week is coming to an end, but excited to be home and sleep in our normal beds again.

Memphis Day 4 (Wednesday)

It's been another fantastic day.

We changed our schedule around a little bit today and went to the Memphis Zoo after our morning devotional times. It was a blast. Some students faced some challenges, but overcame their fears (of birds, snakes, etc.) Some were overjoyed by seeing their favorite animals and others went the extra mile to make sure they found soft serve ice cream (the most logical adventure). It was a great time to get a break from all the hard work and reward the students. Once again, the leaders could not be more thankful for the amazing attitudes of the students. 

When we left the zoo we went straight to the gyms- Bethel La Belle and St. Andrews to await the arrival of the kiddos. It was so sweet to see the Memphis students' excitement when they saw our students just after one day. The majority of our time was spent playing basketball, helping kids with their homework, painting nails, and learning some new dance moves. 

During our worship and debrief time tonight, led by Caleb Raines and Laura Joachims, we once again encouraged each other by pointing out things we saw someone else do well. There were so many stories of our students and leaders being intentional with the students they were around. Whether it was on the basketball court or during hair and nail time, our team has been so great to show Jesus' love in action and deed. 

Tomorrow (Thursday) is our last day at the gyms. It will be a sad but sweet time. Pray that our students will take advantage of their final interactions with the students they've made relationships with and that the Memphis students' hearts will be soft and open to hearing and understanding the gospel. Pray for our students to have courage and the words to say and to be driven by the love they know of Jesus.

Guatemala: KIDDOS FINALLY!!!

Just when we thought it could not possibly get any better!

Today began with some Lucky Charms, Captain Crunch, and fresh from the cow-milk. Following a much appreciated sugar filled breakfast we headed to a local private school here in zone 25 where 80 elementary students were waiting for our team.  And it was a BLAST! We did some face painting, music led in Spanish by Fernando, Gabby, and Fabby (FG team with us), arts and crafts, and a gospel skit wonderfully and hilariously preformed by our team showing the conversion of Saul to Paul.  Aubree Beeman shared her testimony following the skit and blew it out of the park. It showed huge progress in advancing the Kingdom and the Fellowship Guatemala Strategy of discipleship in this new zone.

After lunch we headed back to San Rafael Elementary (where we painted yesterday) but this time 140 young ones greeted us at the gate of the school and these kiddos are CUTE! With newly painted classrooms they were so excited to have painted faces! From butterflys, to lions, to batman!

After face paint and some games we were able to sing some worship songs in spanish with the kids. Gabby (their youth leader) does an incredible job with these kids.  She gets them singing and dancing for Jesus in one moment to sitting attentively with Lauren as she rocked her testimony the next. We were sad to say goodbye but luckily we get to go back Wednesday to preform the Gospel Skit in the morning for them and then again in the afternoon for the parents! 

Please be praying for that Jesus would touch the hearts of these families and that discipleship opportunities would be open for Fellowship Guatemala.

After dinner we headed back to the Mission Hotel where Doug led a local youth group in Panorama and our Aubree and Cari led us through Ephesians 1:6-10 (they did incredible)!

Excited to see what God continues to do in this city. They are hungry for truth, please pray they would hear and believe it.

Memphis Day 3 (Tuesday)

It's been another great day here in Memphis. We started the morning with our normal routine of breakfast, talk (led by Christa Campbell), personal devotional and small groups. We studied 1 John 3:10-18 and discussed how to love in deed and truth. 

We headed to another MAM gym today called St. Andrews. Before we started working, a MAM staff member named Chelton shared his testimony with us. He shared how he came to know the Lord and how he's come to see how our God is a God of adventure. He reflected on how God is not safe, but he is good. 

Everyone worked hard again today and we deep cleaned the St. Andrews, which is owned by a church. Their gym had recently gotten a new floor and still had some drying to do, so we were not able to get in the gym today, but cleaned and prayed over some classrooms kids are in everyday. We also picked up a lot of trash around the area before the Memphis students got out of school. 

After lunch we sent some of our team to another MAM gym called Bethel La Belle to get time with their elementary students. The rest of our group stayed at St. Andrews and waited for their students to arrive. It was incredible to watch our students as they so eagerly jumped right into serving the Memphis kids. A few girls immediately drew in some other girls by showing them how to make friendship bracelets. Many kids have homework they had to finish when they first got to the gym, so our kids were quick to help them out. It was an incredible picture- to walk into the school room and see almost every Memphis kids paired with one of our students. When their homework was finished they all went outside and played until their dinner time. 

It was great for our kids to finally get some time with the elementary students. And the Memphis kids absolutely love our kids being there with them. I've heard so many times from MAM staff that their kids look forward to our group coming every year. I am continually encouraged and thankful for the wonderful group of students we have. They are all so eager to serve and initiate and are becoming such great leaders. On the bus ride back to our main gym, the Grizz, our students were overflowing with exciting stories of the afternoon.

We had a hearty dinner of hamburgers and hotdogs, followed by a great worship time led by Adrianna Pate and some of our leaders. Mark also led us through a time of encouraging each other by pointing out ways we saw our teammates "doing it right". As we were sharing, our bus driver, Michael (who has spent a lot of time with us and participated in a lot of our events) even spoke up and said he could see how our team reaches out to those around us- including him. He said he's never felt so included in a group he's driven for. 

We continue to walk faithfully in what the Lord places in front of us. It's been sweet to see some fruits already and pray for abundance as we continue throughout the week. 

The night ended with an intense game of Leader vs. Students soccer game. Tied 2-2, the game went to a shoot out. The students were victorious, the leaders were humbled. There will be a rematch.

Colorado Springs Day 2

Hey guys,
Day 2 was great. We started the morning with Derek Horn teaching through Philippians 1. He talked about the value of partnering in the gospel. He said that our partnership with them was an encouragement to their whole church. We went from there to prayer walk the neighborhoods. We have consistently seen that where we prayer walk on Spring Break, God tends to do amazing work throughout the year. In fact, the neighborhood that Derek now lives in and ministers in was one we prayed for a year ago.

We then went to serve at the Whites' elementary school. The kids did great and worked very hard. For some, it might not seem immediately apparent how this makes kingdom impact, but the Whites are wanting to get plugged in with the school and administration to get to know people in the community. Our kids came and served under the Whites' name and built relational equity for them as they continue to minister in this neighborhood.

We had dinner at the Horns' house, and the night quickly became Derek Horn story hour. We were literally wiping tears out of our eyes and picking ourselves up off of the floor from laughing so hard. 10 years of student ministry experience will leave you with some great stories. One of the neatest things has been hearing stories from Derek of movements of disciple making he's seen take place in high school small groups. It helped cast a vision for our kids of how Christ can work through high school kids to reach their school.

We put on a Winter Olympics night at the local YMCA for kids. Everyone played a part in making this night happen. For a young church plant that hasn't fuller developed their kids ministry, it was fun to bring the gifts of these Little Mo, KidMo and 456 leaders to the party. Hannah Biondolillo and Meriel Francis led the kids through an opening ceremony where kids picked the team names, made a flag and processed in. Jacob Keeney and Eric Dorothy led the kids through a winter biathlon and Pool Noodle hockey. Afterwards, Taylor Holmstrom led the kids in worship, and Olympic Gold Medalist Brandon Slay spoke to the kids about the treasure greater than gold that God offers all who believe. Brandon leads a missional community (community group) for Converge.

The kids hit their beds whipped after a 12 hour day. The Lord is stretching and growing us in a way that has been a blast. Everyone is doing well.

Memphis Day 2 (Monday)

Our first full day has been a great success. We were thrown a few curve balls with our schedule, but the attitudes and flexibility of our kids and leaders were superb.

We began our day discussing 1 John 2:15-16- what it means to love things of the world and what it means to the love the world the way God does. Zach Layton prefaced the passage during breakfast, the students had some personal devotional time, and we also had some small group time. 

Late morning to early afternoon we deep cleaned the gym we are staying at- The Grizzlie. They also cleaned up a lot of trash around the gym. One student, Meghan Kendall was so excited when she found a small Santa statue. We were so impressed and encouraged by the work ethic and positive attitudes of all the students. 

After we finished working we were able to play in the Grizzlie gym with their students for the rest of the afternoon. We had not originally planned on staying at this same gym all day, but the Lord was so good to still provide us with great opportunities even when there are schedule changes. 

The Memphis students we were around today were mostly 6-9th graders. This is not the usual age group we focus on, and it can be more intimidating, but our students were still so wonderful to jump in and initiate conversations. Tomorrow we plan to meet the elementary students at the other 2 gyms we're serving with. 

After the Memphis students left, we headed to Central BBQ and had a delicious dinner. Some of the MAM staff and their students even joined us. 

It was a day full of hard work and play. The kids should definitely sleep well tonight.

Guatemala: The First Few Days

It has been 3 days and already an incredible time here in Guatemala City. The people of Guatemala have been so welcoming and Iglesia Fellowship Guatemala is being used in huge ways for God's glory and kingdom advancement across this nation.

Day 1 was full of travel! But everyone with joyful, excited, and somewhat nervous hearts booked it down from XNA to GUA Airport. We were welcomed by the Fellowship Guatemala Team (Daniel Bran, Fernando, & Alfredo) immediately with warm hugs, incredible food, and a tour around town as Daniel had us pray over different areas of his Zone (District 17).  God has been moving in powerful ways in zone 17 and is going to continue as his people continue to make disciples and share the gospel with the community of that zone.

Day 2 (Sunday) by far was one of the most powerful experiences I believe many people of our team have ever experienced. We are working with Fellowship Guatemala to build from the ground up a different gospel community in Zone 25.  The difference of the zones is very clear as Zone 17 where the gospel has been present and active for several years is a place where christian community is thriving, zone 25 is a place where Daniel and his team hope to next bring the gospel to.  So without hesitation our students hit the streets with translators sharing the gospel and their testimonies and it was powerful!!!! A few accepted Christ into their life as their Lord and Savior and it doesn't end there!

That night we got to witness Fellowship Guatemala host many who we invited earlier to join in a worship service in zone 25. Many showed up and after some incredible time in Worship and a gospel presentation, many of the community found themselves in tears praying to receive Christ! And it doesn't end there either!!!  Fellowship Guatemala has as a first priority to lead this community into Discipleship relationships. So for the several who accepted Christ last night the staff of FG took down their name, number, address, and will begin immediately to help these new believers grow in the faith to one day be disciple makers themselves!

We found ourselves overjoyed with what God has done in zone 25 and we had only been here for a day!

Day 3 (Monday) we were able to go serve and bless Zone 25 by a day full of painting in a local elementary school. Our team worked so hard but after 8 hours of painting still had so much joy! 

After eating a nice meal of BBQ Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, and Horchata (Rice Milk w/ Cinamon) we came back to our hotel to be lead powerfully in Ephesians by Garrison and Jeremy. Each night two of our students will be leading us in different sections of Ephesians 1.

More updates to come. Please pray that Jesus would continue to work boldly and powerfully in Zone 25. Tomorrow we will be working with the elementary students whose classes we painted today to bring a day full of Fun, Skits, Songs, and gospel presentations! Lift up our team that we would boldly love the teachers and students of San Rafael Elementary and that Jesus would use this elementary school as a launching pad for his glory in this community.

Memphis Day 1 (Sunday)

It has been a great start to the week! The bus ride was fantastic with no trouble at all and little traffic. We unfortunately were unable to watch Frozen because the TVs were not working, but it didn't stop us from having a great time. Our bus driver let us use the PA system to play music through. We got creative and played "name that tune", had a lip syncing contest, and still listened to the Frozen soundtrack. 

The kids were so excited when we pulled up to the Grizzlies Center, they all started cheering. We had pizza, went over rules and expectations for the week, and played some fun games before we settled down for bed. We're excited to start serving tomorrow.

Colorado Springs Day 1

Hello friends and family. We had a great first day in Colorado Springs. Everyone started out pretty tired after icy roads but us in 2 hours later than expected, but our hosts were incredibly gracious. After a good night's sleep and a great breakfast with each of our host homes, we joined Converge for their Sunday morning worship gathering. Our students were great. They did the setup of the audio/visual system, set out the chairs, ran the kids program, and Taylor Holmstrom and Nick Jennings led worship (which Converge all said was a treat). They don't have a worship leader in their church yet. I was reminded of how abundantly blessed we are with leaders when a 17 year-old high schooler was able to lead a young church plant to worship in such an honest and glorifying way. When Derek asked if anyone of our students had ever served with kids before, I did a quick head count and realized that nearly every single student on the trip currently served in some form of kids ministry at Mosaic. Our students are actually able to model to the adults of Converge what it looks like to serve your local church.

Derek taught on 2 Corinthians 5 and how we are all called to be ministers of reconciliation wherever we are. He pointed out that God's plan for discipleship is actually shockingly simple: Love God, Love Others, Make Disciples. The problem is that we are often not faithful to that plan. Great word for our team.

After lunch at the Whites', we took off for the elementary school that the Whites' children attend. The kids served there picking up trash and completely cleaning our the garden boxes the school uses. The goal behind these service projects is to honestly love people well. It shows the city of Colorado Springs what happens when "the uncommon love of Jesus comes into the common places of the city.

We closed the day out with dinner at the Horns' house and a discussion of what discipleship looks like for a high school student.

Everyone is doing great. No altitude sickness yet, though we're all getting winded quicker than usual. We're keeping everyone hydrated. Today we start off with studying Philippians together before spending a day prayer walking neighborhoods, serving at the school and putting on a Winter Olympics event at the YMCA. Pray that Jesus would make his grace known to the people of Colorado Springs, the Converge team and our students.

Guatemala Update 3

mosaic friends and family,

thanks for giving me some grace in my lack of posting yesterday.  with full intent, we came home late from a fantastic day of ministry with fellowship guatemala around 10 pm, only to find that the one computer at the hotel was booked till past 11.  my missions alarm clock was ringing in my head so i´ll call it like it was...i went to bed.  what a day though!  we went throughout the local communities as small teams sharing the gospel with families that were on the ´being prayed for by the church list´´.  it was a special balance of needing of great courage, and the element of relationship.  every one of our students shared their testimonies, along with the gospel, multiple times with the help of a translator.  they were un.be.liev.able.  i was so proud.  at the end of our time, 21 people had prayed to receive christ and asked if they could be followed up with by means of discipleship, accountability, and-or small group particiation.  it stretched our comfort zone...but was  so so good.  many comments by students about how ´´it only works when you do it´.  many shared about friends back home they would like to pursue in a similar fashion. so incredible. god is good. in the afternoon then, we led a compassion international kids program that meets in the church.  praise the lord we came prepared!  100 kids jammed full the church and for two hours we did crafts, games, songs, and our shadrach, meshach, and abednago skit. lots of fun memories and big hugs from those adorable kids

today was our day of rest. and boy...did we need it.  we went to antigua, a beautiful tourist city 45 minutes outside of the city.  we were there from about 930 till 330 siteseeing, shopping, eating well, and drinking mulitple cups of coffee `<`parents, your students just may come back as coffee addicts...sorry<  we then came back to iglesia biblica and put on a program for their student ministry. they were having a soccer tournament that we participated in.  really fun, we realized our feet our slow, but our hearts and bodies are big.  very useful to push around lighting fast guatemalans...for the gospel of course.  then mateo preached a gospel message with some neat worship.  it was special

well, time for bed. we have a long day of travel tomorrow. parents, we will see you at about 530 at the nwa airport.  please do not leave quickly, as we would like to pray together as a team before we all go our own seperate ways

Guatemala Update 2

i was able to hold true to my promise by getting in a blog in by thursday!  even if it was by 11;30 guatemala time.  by the way...if some of the words come across funny, guatemala makes their keyboards different from ours.  i still can't find the capitalizing button...hahaha.  our time in the mountains was fantastic.  truly was a blessing from God to see the students do their thing. who ever thought there would be or could be a justin bieber dance party in the middle of nowhere...leave it to us to pull off though. so fun.  we spent each morning planting lemon, orange, and avacodoe trees for families with great spiritual potential and that have growing relatiohsips with hugo and susannah, our missionary partners.  this was an ongoing illustration also of planting seeds of the gospel and seeing the ongoing fruit that it prayerfully would produce. we would pray for each family during and after the planting of the trees. it was very special.  we would then use the afternoons to play with kids through games, crafts, skits, and pinatas.  i can't wait to show you the pictures and videos.  major props to our students for boldly sharing their testimonies, bible stories, and the gospel many times in front of many kids.  highlight of my time personally was being with 3 potential church planters as pastor chip drew out the triad of discipleship and church multiplication literally on the dirt floor of one of their houses. so cool

we left this morning and got into the city where we met up with pastor daniel bran of fellowship guatemala.  what a great man!  we spent the afternoon going to houses of needy and hurting people, praying with families and sharing the love of jesus.  erika and bonnie got to lead 3 people to the lord during this time!  one of the men who prayed to receive christ was a very hard and difficult man, and has been prayed for for months by the church.  who new 2 white girls from arkansas would be the knock out punch of truth and love!!!!  we then attanded an outreach service tonight at pastor daniels church.  they asked us 30 minutes before if we would like to have some of our kids play in a band for them, and if our students would share their testimonies with the church. by the way, there was 200 people there.  so cool when our students without blinking an eye volunteered fearlessly to do both.  the band was made up of luke on drums, brianna on piano, alex on violin, erika and matt singing, with matt playing bass.  it went great!  reid also shared his testimony using strength as his theme and illustration...quoting then 'i can do all things through christ who gives me strength'.  he killed it...so proud.

well...i am absolutely sueno...translated...sleepy.  i will be able to post again tomorrow night.  pray as tomorrow we put on a kids program, pray with more families, and talk more church planting strategy in guatemala

Memphis Update 5

Thursday was a very full and emotional day. We spent the morning finishing up a couple of projects and the afternoon at our respective gyms. It was very hard to say goodbye to our new friends. We worshiped with FSM again tonight and had a great experience with the Lord. The students have had an incredible week. Parents, please talk to your students about their week. My guess is they will tell you about a life-changing experience. Thanks again so much for all the prayers. We can't wait to come back next year! We will see you in Northwest Arkansas on Friday.

Memphis Update 4

Today was another great day. We spent the morning scrubbing floors and working on a landscape project. We got to spend some good time with the kids this afternoon. Tonight the students were treated to an Arkansas/Memphis baseball game in Redbird Stadium. Some of the kids from MAM joined us and had a great time! The students are displaying incredible servant hearts and we couldn't be more proud of them.

Memphis Update 3

Tuesday was a very full day. After breakfast and our morning devo/quiet time (we are studying 1 Peter), we cleaned one of the gyms in the morning and then split into our groups again and got to love on the kids in 2 locations. Some great relationships are being formed. The students are being impacted in a huge way. We then went to Central BBQ and then had worship with Fellowship's Sunday Morning students who are also here this week. It was incredible to see 200 students from NWA worshiping together here. It was a sweet night. Thank you so much for praying for these students this week. God is moving here in Memphis!

Portland Update 1

Hey guys,
Incredible first day. Travel went smoothly (well kinda. we had a bit of a bumpy flight). Upon landing in Portland, we took a train and then a bus downtown before meeting up with the bread & wine team at the Urban Grind, a really cool coffee house in NE Portland. We heard a little bit about the church and then started "the Story of God," a narrative that presents the story of the entire Bible. We did a quick cleanup of the Urban Grind and then headed off to our hosthomes. Good first day. Excited to see how God will grow us and encourage the church here.

Memphis Update 2

What a great day! This morning the team spent some time cleaning the gym to help out MAM. After lunch, we split into 2 groups. One group went to another gym and the other group stayed at the Grizz gym. We had a great time playing with the kids and building relationships. Some of our students had an opportunity to share their story that they worked on last night with the kids. They all did such a great job! Looking forward to seeing some of the same kids tomorrow to continue to develop relationships and love on them.

Guatemala Update 1

we made it to guatemala!  it was a pretty uneventful day of travel, which is absolutely wonderful news.  we just pulled in to the hotel and can smell the guatemalan pizza as it is being delivered shortly.  There are 2 guy rooms and 2 girl girls with our students split up between them.  pray for chip jackson tonight as he has to sleep with reid schatzman and jason holmstrom [just kidding...mostly].  we will be waking up early tomorrow morning, loading the van, and driving up to the villages near santa cruz.  pray for safe travel as we go.  we will get to our village around 1, then spend till 5 in our first village working alongside hugo and sussannah and loving on kids.  then tomorrow night will be our first team study together in Daniel 1, reading our book Radical, and starting to talk about spiritual gifts [throughout the week we will be looking at spiritual gifts,  the last night we will be taking a spiritual gift test]. We would love you to join us in prayer and study this week as we read Daniel 1 through 6 [1 chapter a night].  we love you all!  i will email again thursday when we return to the city
